MAAC on the Map Edition II At Manhattan Art & Antique Center

Art and antique collectors enjoyed an exciting new arts initiative at The Manhattan Art & Antique Center – MAAC on the Map. It is a four-part exhibition series happening in 2017. After the resounding success of MAAC on the Map Edition I, that opened on March 11, 2017, The Manhattan Art & Antique center is thrilled to announce the opening of their next contemporary art exhibition in the series. The opening and reception of MAAC on the Map Edition II, featuring the artistry of Alexis Duque, Alicia Degener, Allan Gorman, Christina Massey, Sarah Whalen and Yikui Gu, took place on Saturday, April 22, 2017 between 4pm-7pm and all were welcome to join in the wine and cheese soiree.

MAAC on the Map is a contemporary art exhibition series that aims to give a platform to emerging and established artists at The Manhattan Art & Antique Center - one a the nation's largest fine art and historical design centers.  MAAC on The Map is a movement to give contemporary artists a new home on the Upper East Side and an opportunity to expose their work to a different audience.  The injection of these vital contemporary artists reinforces that the Upper East Side is a potent destination for innovation, a creative hotspot where experience meets a new breed of artistic disrupter.

The Maac on the Map Edition I inaugural exhibition opened on Saturday March 11, 2017 with a packed reception to honor the eight female, Asian artists featured in the first series.  They included Gao Yuan, O'Zhang, Xin Song, Zahra Nazary, Shiva Jlayer Lulu Dong, Ping Zheng, Dasha Shkurpela.

Visitors had the opportunity to explore the work, curated by Paul Anavian and Michaela Boruta, in the six dedicated gallery spaces at the Manhattan Art & Antique Center.  The guests were also invited to discover the wonders of remaining 50 galleries populating the space.  The artists were on hand to discuss their works in detail with the public.  Smaller groups gathered at various artworks to hear the motivations, techniques and inspiration for the artist's creations.

This format will again be employed at Maac on the Map Edition II.  The curatorial vision for Maac on the Map Edition II is based on visual patterns and how we "see" the world through our own particular cultural or personal filters.  It's a collection of artists who are exploring the idea of the line.  How we break it, flow with it, chase it, sexualize it or define space with it to control our relationship with the world.  Each artist is gazing, glaring, observing society and shifting the way we "look" at our inner and outer landscapes.

New York City comes to life in Spring withthe rich offering of art fairs focusing on Contemporary art and design.

Some of the artists featured in Maac on the Map Edition II that I met
were :

Alexis Duque

"The chaotic and unavoidable process of urbanization in our globalized and over populated world are the central focus of my work.  I am interested in depicting clustered spaces and precarious constructions that seem to multiply and overflow with crowded objects in one continuous urban sprawl, at the same time as such structures begin to crumble and decompose from within.  Through the use of exaggerated drama and distortion, my work attempts to challenge the way the viewer confronts the idea of consumerism and urbanization with contemporary culture and draw the viewer's attention to the isolation of the transitory residents, like semi-nomads that emigrate hop  to find a better life on the outskirts of large metropolises."

For more information www.alexisduque.net

Allan Gorman

"I find myself drawn to hidden abstract patterns, random shapes and aesthetic tensions I see in real objects - particularly within the confines of industrial structures, machinery and vehicles.

Although I paint in a realistic style, my focus isn't necessarily on the precise rendering of objects, but rather on conveying the abstract information created by - and within those objects.  I ask viewers to share a journey of discovery with me and hope they'll become as excited and fascinated and moved as I am about the beauty that can be found in what's often taken for commonplace and mundane.

In this way, I define my works as abstract compositions nested in the guise of realism and I use this criterion to inform my choices of what to paint."

For more information please visit www.allangorman.com

Yikui Gu

"The spaces between order and chaos, sincerity and irony, or design and chance are the most interesting to explore. My paintings are an attempt to probe these areas using visual elements from sneakerhead culture, found internet images, Ikea catalogues, personal photos, and art historical references. Through this combination of political, cultural, and domestic imagery, I hope to affirm and subvert the modern human condition. I want my work to be both horrifying and hilarious."

Hello darlings, this past week I celebrated my birthday bash at the popular Swing 46 Supper Club and Lounge with Bandleader George Gee and American Jazz Vocalist John Dokes.

George Gee – bandleader of The George Gee Swing Orchestra here in NYC has been  known to preach about how#SwingMakesYouHappy to whomever may be within listening radius plus the many captive audiences at their countless shows! So much so, it’s also the title of their recent CD recording (which was on the short list for a Grammy nomination plus 12 straight weeks on the Jazz radio charts)!

2017 marks their 20th anniversary of performing weekly at Swing 46 Jazz & Supper Club located in the heart of NYC on Restaurant Row in Times Square. Big Band swingin’ for the both the local and international swing dance community supplemented by jazz music lovers and worldwide tourists – this little club that could – has withstood multiple trial and tribulations to be the last one standing (in the WORLD)!

A regular patron they were privileged to entertain on the SWING46 dance floor was the late, great Frankie Manning (the legendary original Savoy Ballroom dancer). Frankie always claimed The George Gee Swing Orchestra was his favorite modern swing orchestra and personally requested for them to perform at many of his numerous birthday celebrations. After his unexpected sudden passing right before his 95th birthday, They help maintain the flame by carrying on at that poignant event and then again at his centennial two years ago.

George Gee and his orchestra continues to perform every Tuesday and now they do a Sunday Brunch.

For more information please visit http://www.georgegee.com

Also I had the pleasure of interviewing American Jazz vocalist John Dokes.

John Dokes is an American vocalist who first came to prominence as a championship lindy hopper in New York. He uses his smooth baritone voice to perform in big band and jazz genres. Singing a mixture of blues, ballads, popular songs, and jazz standards, John is currently the featured vocalist with the popular big band George Gee’s Swing Jazz Orchestra. His musical influences include Nat King Cole, Joe Williams, Jimmy Rushing and Frank Sinatra.

Long Island is about to turn up the heat! Tocolo Cantina just opened its doors on December 3, 2014.  This restaurant boast an authentic Mexican cuisine with an innovative twist.  This trendy eatery is located in the Gallery at Westbury Plaza (920 Old Country Rd, Garden City).

Renowned Chef Alexis Samayoa, a Brooklyn native with a stellar career, is the executive chef and under his direction Tocolo Cantina will serve refined, modern Mexican and Oaxacan cuisine in a casual and fun atmosphere with a strong emphasis on service.

The 98-seat restaurant merges elements of a modern California eatery with those of a Mexican Cantina.  The restaurant's decor is complete with copper walls, encaustic tile, and a hydraulic garage door.  The restaurant is anchored by a lively bar in the center of the room.

Chef Alexis Samayoa’s menu is influenced by his upbringing and a career that spans over a decade through renowned kitchens like El Vez, La Esquina (with Chef Akhtar Nawab), Txikito (with Chef Alex Raij), WD-50 (with Chef Wiley Dufresne) and Empellon. His approach at Tocolo Cantina reflects a deep love of food – smells, textures, seasonings and freshness, as well as a devoted skill set most inspired by Empellon’s Chef Alex Stupak and his creativity.

Chef Alex Samayoa incorporates both traditional Mexican fare and his own modern interpretations of customary Mexican dishes into the menu.

The Guacamole Classico (diced onion, jalapenos, cilantro), Snapper Ceviche (with salsa verde) and Lamb Barbacoa Taco balance traditional ingredients with perfection. Samayoa’s talent working with traditional Mexican techniques and flavors is perhaps most apparent in the Pollo Asado (with mole mancha mantele) large plate.

In contrast, the Guacamole Yucateco (mango, habanero chile, red onion, red bell pepper), Shrimp Ceviche (with Salsa Xni Pec) and Chicken Taco burst with flavor and capture Alexis’s creative talent and modern skills.

The menu’s mix of petite and large plates, as well as its two large communal dining tables, hopes to inspire long celebrations over food.
Since no great cantina is complete without a lively bar and lofty cocktail program, Tocolo Cantina promises to deliver the best margaritas and sangrias around. The cocktail menu will offer a large selection of specialty drinks, as well as traditional Mexican tequilas, mezcals and beers. Signature cocktails include the “Grilled Lime Margarita”, made with Lunazul Silver tequila, muddled grilled limes, agave and Grand Marnier in a mezcal rinsed glass and the “Autumn Margarita”, featuring Herradura Reposado, cranberry jam, pomegranate, fresh lime in an allspice rimmed glass.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily.

Step back into the 1920's jazz age with flappers, gangsters, dolls and dandies every Thursday night with Michael Arenella and his Quartet playing dreamy romantic ballads of the day at the Red Room above the KGB Bar located at 85 East Fourth Street in the East Village.

Handsome Michael Arenella is an accomplished musican, singer and bandleader. His passion for period-authentic retro establishes him as an expert of 1920's jazz. His famous era is the 1920's through the 1930's a time of Prohibition and Speakeasys which is why he created his biggest accomplishment to date,  The Dreamland Orchestra.

The Dreamland Orchestra performs hot jazz at nightclubs, weddings, red carpet events, various night venues around Manhattan and tours around the world.

Arenella's latest gig  and the most fun way to experience his talent is at the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor's Island in June and then again in August.  The event is entirely organized by Aranella and his staff.

it's a great opportunity to dress in vintage fashion and gentleman can wear their Boardwalk Empire-styled duds.

Michael always does his performances  wearing period clothing, sporting a period haircut and  singing through a tall vintage microphone.

When he is not playing you can find him driving his a Studebaker from the '20s or another one of the several vintage cars in his collection which he revealed to me that he has eight vintage automobiles.  His favorites are a 1930's Buick and a 1960's Lincoln.

The Red Room is a third-floor crown jewel of a cocktail and live-performance spot right above KGB Bar in the East Village.

Denis Woychuk founded KGB Bar in 1993 and said he needed a new project after his youngest went off to college.

“I wanted to do something where people can interact with one another,” Denis revealed.

The real star is the room itself. Mr. Woychuk worked with the designers Bonnie DeWitt and Patrick Kennedy to design an intimate, speakeasy ambiance. Infamous Gangster Lucky Luciano ran an actual speakeasy named the Palm Casino at the actual location in 1922.

I inquired if the Red Room was haunted.  Denis replied, "I don't know my staff says it is, they hear bumps, shrieks, whispers, but when the lights go out, I go home."

We dined on delicious libations of gnocchi pesci and lobster ravioli.  Signature cocktails included a White Lady and the Ritz Carlton.

The Living Room Restaurant Cuisine at the Maidstone Hotel

The Living Room inside the Maidstone is a lovely dining establishment.  The hotel was recently bought by Jenny Ljunberg who has been a sponsor of The Hamptons International Film Festival for  several years.

The restaurant whenever they can, prioritizes the use of organic, locally sourced and seasonally appropriate ingredients. But as dedicated Swedes, there are some things that they simply can't do without - a Västerbotten pie just wouldn't taste the same using cheddar. No need to worry though, the Swedish products they import adhere to their good, clean & fair mantra.

Swedish chef Mathias Brogie only uses herbs fresh from the herb garden in the hotel's exterior gardens, fish from the waters around Long Island and meat from animals who get to play outside. The restaurant's baked goods  including the bespoke Swedish loaves are from the Blue Duck Bakery down the road.

Press, celebrites and guests enjoyed wine and appetizers at the newly opened French Bistro Le Midi located at 11 East 13th St. • New York, NY 10003.

Welcome to Le Midi Bar & Restaurant, located just off Union Square in Greenwich Village – a warm and welcoming French bistro in downtown New York.  This special eatery serves dinner seven days a week and lunch Mondays through Fridays.  Le Midi has a full weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Experience happy hour from 5 to 7 pm every day.  Le Midi also offers an exceptional prix-fixe menu for lunch, and for dinner (5 pm to 6:30 pm Monday through Saturday and all evening Sunday).  Three courses for $18.95 and $24.95, respectively. The restaurant is baby stroller and wheelchair friendly.

Vintage films are always being screened discreetly at Le Midi Bar & Restaurant for atmosphere. However we do also host specific screening events from time to time. For instance, for the Oscars and Superbowl, along with a special menu and drinks.
