Kevin Babington of Ireland guided the young mare Shorapur to the fastest fault-free jump-off time (39.16 seconds) to claim the $250,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix, presented by Land Rover, in an exciting climax to the 39th Annual Hampton Classic.

Brianne Goutal of New York City rode Nice De Prissy to second place (0 faults/40.34 seconds), and Richie Moloney of Ireland rode Freestyle De Muze to third place, with 4 faults in 44.26 seconds. Ramiro Quintana of Argentina guided Whitney to fourth place, with 8 faults in 38.58 seconds.

The Hampton Classic Grand Prix was an FEI-sanctioned qualifier for the Longines FEI World Cup Final in Las Vegas next April.

Moloney's third-placed finish was more than enough to put him on top in the $30,000 Longines Leading Rider Challenge for the second consecutive year, earning 300 points from the week's 10 open jumper classes. Fellow Irishman Darragh Kenny held on to the runner-up spot with 283 points, even though he left on Saturday night for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in France. Quintana finished third (195) and Shane Sweetnam of Ireland finished fourth (177.5).

"It was nice to go into the jump-off and know that I'd done it already. I had a great week, and winning the Longines award was a great way to finish it off," said Moloney, of Wellington, FL.

Babington's day ended better than it started: As the first rider in the ring at 8:00 a.m. for the 7/8-Year-Old Jumper Championships, he fell in the water jump. Since he was completely soaked, he had to wear his back-up jacket for the grand prix, the one missing the lowest front button. "Maybe I should start wearing this jacket for good luck," he quipped.

Guilherme Jorge's course proved considerably challenging to the 33 riders from five nations who attempted it. Jorge agreed with the three winners' evaluation that the second half of the course was especially demanding. "It was certainly a long course, but I was very happy that the faults were spread out all over the course," he said.

Moloney led off the jump-off round in front of the 15,000 fans who surrounded the Grand Prix Ring, sitting in the grandstands, the VIP tents and the corporate chalets. He said that Freestyle De Muze, 10, is relatively inexperienced at this level of competition and isn't a fast horse. Plus, he knew before the class that he only had to finish fourth to win the Longines Award, meaning he was guaranteed of that prize, even if he was the slowest rider.

So he approached the shortened course conservatively. Freestyle De Muze knocked down only the second-last fence, the Longines oxer.

Quintana's plan was clearly to better Moloney's time, and he did it easily, but at the cost of two rails. That left the door wide open for Babington.

"I had planned to go medium fast, even before I watched Richie and Ramiro go," said Babington, who lives in Gwynedd Valley, Pa. "It was a careful jump-off-you had to jump all the jumps before you worried about your speed. But she's naturally a very fast mare, so I can have a fast time without even trying."

Goutal, 25, who has dual U.S. and French citizenship, said that she "didn't want to go crazy fast, but I think I played it a little too safe."

Babington said that this was the first 1.6-meter grand prix for Shorapur, 9, and that he'd only decided to enter her, instead of another horse, after she'd done a $10,000 class in the Grand Prix Ring on Friday. "I thought she felt a little too brave over those smaller jumps and that it was time to move her up," he said.

For 30 years, the Hampton Classic benefited from the guidance of equestrian manager Steve Stephens. Earlier this year, Stephens announced his retirement from the Hampton Classic and he was honored by the show's staff in a center-ring ceremony before the start of the $250,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix.

After a successful career as a grand prix rider, Stephens established himself as one of the leading course designers in the world. He was also the proprietor of Stephens Equestrian Designs, specializing in the design and manufacture of jumps for competition. All the jumps in the Grand Prix Ring, featuring many of the show's sponsors, were designed and built by Stephens Equestrian Designs.

In addition to managing the Hampton Classic, Stephens served as manager of the Winter Equestrian Festival and the National Horse Show. But it was because of Stephens that the Hampton Classic has achieved its position as one of the premier horse shows in the world.

In 2013, the USHJA honored Stephens with its Lifetime Achievement Award, and earlier this year, he was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame.

The Hampton Classic, which ran Aug. 24-31, featured six show rings, a Boutique Garden with more than 70 vendors and a wide selection of dining options on its 60-acre show grounds. The Classic's world-class equestrian competition attracts many of the nation's top professional and amateur riders including Olympic medalists.

This year the event attracted a variety of celebrities including B. Smith, Gayle King, Mayor Guiliani, Matt Lauer, Jill Zarin, Jean Shafiroff, Beth Stern and Jennifer Lopez.

More than 30 leading East End artists and photographers are donating their time and/or works to benefit a cause they believe in – improving sexual and reproductive health – and support Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP).

The annual East End Benefit on Sunday, May 25 includes a silent auction with items donated by the artists as well as businesses, individuals, cultural attractions, and supporters. The event, which runs from 5-7 p.m. at a private home in Water Mill, follows the theme “Celebrate Summer, Stronger Together. Freedom and Care. No Matter What.”

More than 160 East End residents are expected to attend (and tickets are still available), and everyone is welcome to take part in the silent auction. Go to www.pphp.org to find the list of auction items and then call or email your bid to (631) 240-1128 or Jenifer.vandeinse@pphp.org.

Photographer Michael Halsband, artist Rima Mardoyan-Smyth, and PPHP Board Vice President Ann Pogue-Campbell are co-chairing the event, and philanthropist Dorothy Lichtenstein is honorary chair. The event is hosted by Lisa and Stephen Eisenstein.
Mardoyan-Smyth noted that the Declaration of Independence talks about individuals having the right to the pursuit of happiness, but in this day and age they should also have the right to health care.

So many wonderful people are helping to make this event a success and support PPHP’s presence in the East End,” she said. “Together we can help PPHP continue to provide access to the care people need.”

According to Halsband, the cause isn’t something you can give to once and forget about it: “This is an ongoing thing, and people need it all the time. It’s essential.”

Pogue-Campbell pointed out that events like the East End Benefit help PPHP provide sexual and reproductive health services to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

The “Who’s Who” of artists includes Chuck Close, who donated a signed Polaroid self-portrait, and numerous other artists who have a strong following on the East End. Francine Fleischer specializes in portraits and landscapes for private and celebrity clients (and has photographed Sarah Jessica Parker); Maria Bowling is a Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist who specializes in botanical art; Steve Miller, an early pioneer in the Sci-Art movement, creates paintings, screenprints, artist books, and sculptures; and Almond Zigmund’s work has been exhibited internationallyfor the past decade, including shows in Zurich, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Columbus.

There’s also photographer Laurie Lambrecht, a former assistant to Roy Lichtenstein; landscape designer Frederico Azevedo; Philippe Cheng, a fine art and commercial photographer, and his wife Bastienne Schmidt, a mixed media artist; and photographer/painter Dalton Portella, who is also a musician. The list goes on and on.

The silent auction also includes golf packages, tickets to the ballet or the Hampton Classic Horse Show, an organic produce share, a boat tour of Peconic Bay, stand-up paddleboard lessons, jewelry, a chef tasting at Almond Restaurant in Bridgehampton, a weekend atHarborwoods Guesthouse in Sag Harbor, massage sessions, and many other offerings. Go to www.pphp.org to find the list of silent auction items and then call or email your bid to (631) 240-1128 or Jenifer.vandeinse@pphp.org.

Tickets are $300 per person; $150 for anyone under age 35 and sponsorships are available. To purchase tickets, contact (631) 240-1128 or Jenifer.vandeinse@pphp.org.

The Grammy nominated Cuban-American singer CuCu Diamantes served as chairman of the 2014 El Museo Gala this past Wednesday, May 21, at Cipriani 42 Street, New York City. El Museo Gala is one of the most keenly awaited annual events on the NY social calendar which also serve as a reunion of her band, Yerba Buena.  "This is an evening of great pride for Latins and an evening of great interest to non-Latins; we could not possibly imagine a better moment for our band to make a special reunion appearance, the first in five years---and we promise it will be special. This will be a gala like no other and we hope everyone will dance till the wee hours." CuCu entertained guests and supporter with both new material from her upcoming solo album as well as Yerba Buena hits.  This is the band's first reunion in six years.

The gala comes on the heels of Diamantes' recent appearance singing in the new Cameron Diaz film, "The Other Woman," directed by Nick Cassavetes and just prior to the release of a new documentary film on Diamantes' musical tour of Cuba, "Amor Cronico" which will have it's own special screening at El Museo July 8th.

A noted philanthropist in her own right, Diamantes is a spokesperson for Amnesty International's "Protect the Human" and "Stop Violence Against Women" campaigns. In 2009, she performed at a peace concert in Cuba to over a million fans. She is also a co-founder, with her husband, the multiple Grammy award winning Venezuelan-born producer, Andres Levin, of Music Has No Enemies, a nonprofit designed to spread social justice through film and music.

Diane von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2014

Diane von Furstenberg's wrap dress turns Forty. To celebrate the her success Diane put a collection of her most iconic designs over the years on display at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Designing graphic prints are as integral to her label as the wrap dress.  Her styles were modeled after the undulating curves of Murano glass and the black and white checks of art deco skyscrapers lit up at night. "Organic meets geometric," she revealed. "I've always thought Venice and New York were similar; they're both islands, they're both centers of art and culture."  Diane's hues for Fall and Winter 2014 are strikingly vivid, particularly the azure blue and violet of a knee-length shift.

          Mark and Estel Fall/Winter 2014

Los Angeles dynamic duo Mark Tango and Estel Day traded in their signature t-shirt collection and went for a much more sophisticated trend for their fall 2014 collection. Still true to their rocker-chic aesthetic, the fashion event started with a black wool v-neck cocktail dress that was styled with a diagonal- shaped top hat that was reminiscent of what you would expect to see in a runway show during the early 1990's.

The hues for Mark and Estel’s fall 2014 collection was a series of black and neutrals with burst of color. Simultaneously there was a twist away from the neutrals made clear in Mark and Estel’s red wrap skirt that flowed naturally, creating a vision of a woman stepping right out of a photo editorial in Vogue.

Betsey Johnson Fall/Winter 2014

Betsey Johnson Fall/Winter 2014 theme is smoking "hot, hot, hot" theme. Designer BetseyJohnson chose to broadcast her collection live in Times Square, an ambition she admittingly wanted to do for many years. "I always want more people to see the show," the infamous cartwheeler said backstage before the models hit the runway. "This is an 'I can't believe my life' moment for me."

Betsey has this gift of making every woman feel like a young girl going to a party.

She loves a sexy chick and has long subscribed to the ethos of more is always better. Retailable pieces included jackets, novelty sweaters in animal-printed fake fur and a sequined gold minidress.

The show ended with two sexy shirtless fireman complete with artifical hoses and fire hats and of course Betsey walking down the runway with her adorable grandchildren and doing her routine cartwheel.

Edwin D'Angelo Fall /Winter 2014

Edwin D'Angelo Fall/Winter 2014 was inspired by the middle of the 20th Century British Aristocracy. Edwin reveal it's called  "Anglomania," conveniently popularized by the smash hit TV drama Downton Abbey. Although Edwin has never really seen "Downton Abbey" he adores the old British aesthetics for years. The simpler styles embraced by the British aristocracy at their country estates earlier in the 20th century transitioned their way into town wear. D'Angelo explores that simplicity by revisiting hues, textures and details originated from that period. The garments have a modern twist, including riding attire, for both men and women significantly the redingote: coats for riding for both sexes, for men astride and women sidesaddle, the name itself slang for "riding coat." Anglomania is elite high fashion that had been born from the mystique of clothing used in the utility mode, transferring its purpose into hierarchy as the clothing styles migrated from country to town. "The birth of the bipolar consumer," reveals Fashion Designer Edwin D'Angelo.

Alon Livne Fall/Winter 2014

Alon Livne Fall/Winter 2014 collection was inspired by George Melford’s silent film, “The Sheik,” featuring the early imperialism in Morocco. Significant garments had special dedication to intricate detailing using bead work, tassels, and hand-embroidery on the silken textured fabrics. The hues were  mauve, amethyst, black, royal blue, and cloud, which the designer emphasized to evoke an exquisite meditative state.

Swarovski crystal beadwork was used consistently adding a lovely dusting of glamor. Most of the models wore fabulous headpieces. The collection is perfect for Red Carpet Award Ceremonies reminding me of Cher in Bob Mackie so many years ago at the Academy Awards. At the time she was criticized for wearing This black ensemble with an ornate head piece but now it is considered an icon of Bob Mackie.
