TV Host Cognac Wellerlane poses for a photo-op at the Macabre Faire Film Festival

For starters the word "Macabre" is pronounced: Ma-Cob.
The "re" is hardly ever heard. What does it mean?

Although it is an adjective meaning: disturbing and horrifying because of involvement with or depiction of death and injury but to horror afienados, the Macabre Faire Film Festival portrays a lighter touch in the sense that, not all of the films screened have been a gore fest. Of course, there isn't anything wrong with adding some gore to your film but, when we all hear the word "Macabre" we remember those hauntingly fascinating films that starred legendary greats such as: Vincent Price & Peter Cushing. Or those fantastic Gothic horrors like those from "Hammer" films. These names in themselves represent what "macabre" means to all of us. The Macabre Faire Film Festival DOES NOT only accept HORROR films but instead they welcome those films that can tap into our fears through what you don't see or hear. Films that fall in the "Dark Drama, Mystery, Suspense, Thriller and Dark Comedy" can also touch upon some elements of fear/horror and so they embrace those as well. Of course, let's not forget those fantasy films or comedies with their horror twists. Truth be told that those exist too and yes, they welcome them. How they could not? Would you have turned down something like "The Evil Dead's: Army of Darkness" which is both a fantasy, a comedy and a horror wrapped into a tight burrito? Well The Macabre Faire Film Festival wouldn't either. So folks, this is what many of the films selected for the Macabre Faire Film Festival offer.

About the only thing they may have to say "No Thanks" to would be a romantic comedy/drama... unless, there's a monster under the bed during love making or other dark element ingredient that can take the viewer to the other side would they then consider. All submitted films are pre-screened by select judges to ensure the films have followed guidelines and are an overall fit for the festival. Then the films are passed on to another set of judges consisting of filmmakers, film critics and or seasoned actors to identify the Official Selections.

I was happy to attend the award ceremony and red carpet.

Horror fans got a real treat This past weekend. The Macabre Faire Film Festival returned to the Upsky Hotel in Hauppauge, Long Island again to celebrate excellence in independent Horror films from around the globe.

Macabre Faire events and Film Festival has a reputation for being a very friendly environment with a wonderful celebratory ambiance within an intimately sized space. If you are a person who needs to be at an event with 1000’s of people in a large space where you may need to attach a GPS on your friends & family so that you can find each other quickly and easily… then the Macabre Faire Film Festival may not be the event for you. However, if you prefer an atmosphere that runs steady; you enjoy costumes; you love movies, music, Halloween and fun non-pressuring vendors; you genuinely enjoy making new friends; you appreciate everything being within close proximity; and are comfortable around a few hundred macabre-loving fans like yourself, then it is most certainly the event for you.

This year the Macabre Faire Film Festive proudly showed 145 films.  These film range from Horror, Comedy, Feature Films and Shorts with a Saturnday Night Awards Ceremony Gala equivalent to the Academy Awards for Best in Category.

For starters the word “Macabre” is pronounced “ma-cob.” The “re” is hardly ever heard. What does it mean?
Although it is an adjective meaning “disturbing and horrifying because of involvement with or depiction of death and injury,” you should approach the Macabre Faire Film Festival with a lighter touch in so far as not all of the films screened are a gore-fest. Of course there isn’t anything wrong with adding some gore to your film but, when we hear the word “Macabre” we remember those hauntingly fascinating films that starred legendary greats such as: Vincent Price & Peter Cushing. Or those fantastic Gothic Horrors like those from “Hammer” films. These names in themselves represent what “macabre” means to the Macabre Fair Film Festival.

Their mission is to provide a venue for showcasing films within a celebratory & respectful environment, where fans can enjoy the independent films entered by those who passionately craft their Strange, Weird, Horrifying, Sci-Fi-tastic, Fantastical and Macabre-laden films. The opportunity to win awards, increase film visibility via press and possibly obtain distribution is always part of the equation with the Macabre Faire Film Festival.

TV Host Cognac Wellerlane poses for a photo-op on Grand Prix Sunday at the Hampton Classic

Members of the press, celebrities and equestrians gathered together at the 40th Hampton Classic in Bridgehampton, NY. The event took place from August 23rd through the 30th. The Hampton Classic is considered one of the most prestigious world-class equestrian competitions. Many of the world’s top jumper and hunter riders come from across the country and beyond to compete for their share of some of the richest prize money in the nation.

The Hampton Classic featured six show rings, a Boutique Garden with more than 70 vendors, and a wide selection of dining options and a Farmer’s Market, all on its 60-acre show grounds. With its top competition and pristine setting, The Hampton Classic is not just a place to see, it’s also a place to be seen. Just in the last two years, A-list celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi, Matt Lauer, Kelly Ripa, Julianne Moore, Sofia Vergara and Mary-Kate Olsen have been in attendance.

Karen Polle of Japan and With Wings leaped to the top of the $250,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix, Presented by Longines.
(McMillen photo

Karen Polle revealed that being the fourth and final rider in the jump-off of the $250,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix, Presented by Longines, wasn't the advantageous position it usually is--because none of the three riders before her had finished faultlessly. The grand prix provided an exciting climax to the 40th Annual Hampton Classic.
"When you have to go clear to win, it actually adds a lot of pressure. It's usually a nice position to be in, but this time it was a lot of pressure. It's sort of yours to lose at that point, so I was definitely nervous," said Polle, 23, who lives in New York City.

But she and With Wings did complete the round perfectly, finishing in 47.96 seconds. Todd Minikus, of Wellington, Fla., took second place on Babalou 41 (4 faults/43.89 seconds), Chris Sorensen of Canada took third on Bobby (4 faults/46.23 seconds), and Meagan Nusz, of The Woodlands, Texas, took fourth on Dynamo (8 faults/47.58 seconds).

"This is definitely the biggest win in my career, and I can't believe it," said Polle. "I can't believe I won this at the Hampton Classic!"

Minikus, 53, used to train Polle, and he said of her, "She's always been a very good rider, and she's won a lot. And With Wings is a very special horse-they're a great match. Japan is lucky to have her."
He then added, "The one thing that she forgot, though, is that when you're in the jump-off, you have to let the old guy win. So she wasn't the best of students, obviously."

Polle, who's about to start her senior year at Yale University, claimed her Japanese citizenship in 2014. She's hoping to qualify for the Japanese Olympic team-which, she said, just earned an Olympic berth last week-in 2016 and when Japan hosts the Olympics in 2020.

The three top-placed riders each received a Longines timepiece selected for them. Sorensen, 33, told Juan-Carlos Capelli, Longines vice president and head of international marketing, "Thank you for the watch, because I've been trying to get one of these for a long time. I've been close but not quite done it."

While four of the 29 starters finished the first round with no faults, three horses retired on course, and 11 finished with 12 or more faults. One of those was 2014 winner Shorapur, ridden by Kevin Babington, who finished with 12 faults.

Still, course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil insisted that it was "a good result."

He explained that he certainly intended to create a challenging course, with so much prize money at stake and a field that included half a dozen Olympic riders and four previous winners. "This is a proven international event," he said, comparing it to such famous international shows (which also have grass fields) as Dublin (Ireland), Hickstead (England) and Spruce Meadows (Canada).

"It's always a long grand prix course here, and I always try to incorporate the double of liverpools and the open water, because you don't see those very often and they are part of our tradition," said Jorge, who'll be designing the show jumping courses for the 2016 Olympics. "It takes a special horse, a horse that has more experience, and we saw many less experienced horses and riders making mistakes."

Capelli presented a fourth Longines watch, and a check, to Shane Sweetnam of Ireland, winner of the $30,000 Longines Leading Rider Challenge, who finished sixth (with 4 faults) in the Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Chaqui Z. Sweetnam was the only rider who scored points in all 10 of the week's open jumper classes, winning two of them, and he'd achieved an unbeatable lead by the end of Saturday's $40,000 Longines Cup.

Sweetnam's total of 355 pints easily outdistanced Minikus (170) and Paul O'Shea (165).

"It was a great week all week. Even today, I still finished sixth with the last rail down, which was my fault. The horse is only 9, so he's still going to get better, and hopefully we'll win next year," said Sweetnam, who competes for his native Ireland but lives in Wellington, Fla.

"This award is a great thing for the riders, because we don't often get this at a show. So I started from the first of the week to push for it," he added.

WVVH-TV is the official Long Island television station of the Hampton Classic. Broadcasts up to five hours of competition and highlights are shown each day during the Classic. These broadcasts can also be seen on line at www.wvvh.tv. Most of the Classic’s other classes are also available on ShowNet.biz.

The Long Beach International Film Festival “Taste on the Beach” event took on place Friday, Aug. 7, between National Boulevard and Edwards Boulevard in Long Beach, New York. Guests enjoyed a new feature “Taste on the Beach” to their flick night event. Taste On The Beach preceded the free movie night “Shorts on the Beach,” where Long Beach and regional restaurants finest foods, wines, cocktails and craft breweries collaborated together to give a sampling of their favorite dishes, bottles and brews.

“The Long Beach International Film Festival continues to provide an opportunity for filmmakers and fans to witness the filming locations Nassau County has to offer whether it be at local beaches, mansions, suburban areas and, of course, Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios,” revealed Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano. “I invite residents to attend the festival and enjoy some of the best samplings of the food, music and film from Long Island.”

Films that were highlighted included Director/Producer Stephanie Donnelly’s narrative/comedy “The Cannoli” – where a Long Island family dinner turns tragic and a choice must be made between dessert and family; Director Sarah Menzies’ San Diego Surf Film Festival Best Short winning documentary “Catch It”, which followed Léa Brassy as her nomadic lifestyle takes a pause and she finds serenity in the Arctic surf of Northern Norway; And Croatian Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s World Premiering “Eye for an Eye”, in which child’s play turns into a showdown of imagination and discipline.

Celebrities that attended the event included News 12 Personality Elisa DiStefano, Comic Jeffery Gurian of sirius XM’s Bennington Show, Chef Danny Gagnon Bravo’s TV “Top Chef,” Realty Stars John and Susan Doneson from Bravo TV’s “Secrets and Wives” and Comedian/Actor Rob Magnotti “Paul Blart Mall Cop 2.”

Agent Richard Alan from Richard Alan Talent Management also came with a bevy of three gorgeous models, Blond Angelina, Redhead Rachel and Brunette Stunner Jazmin Ivy who promoted Publisher John Colascione’s websites LongIslandExchange.com, LIUsedCars.com and NewsLI.com.

The Long Beach International Film Festival – sponsored by Nassau County – celebrates the art of storytelling through cinema. Presenting shorts, fiction and documentary formats, the festival is committed to exhibiting films that convey a fresh voice and differing perspectives. Bailey Houses Gala and Auction was held at the Chelsea Piers on March 26 2015.

The event celebrated the heroism of individuals and organizations that assists the Bailey House’s mission of transforming the lives of people with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses through housing, health services and community.

Many came to give their support including the cast of B.O.R.N. To Style from the FYI network.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Cast members Brandon Hood and Devin Stokes.  During the evening I also spoke to TV Personality Ted Allen and News Anchor Jane Pauley who have to come to Bailey House Auction and Gala for many years.

Bailey House’s mission is to help transform the lives of people with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses through housing, health services and community support.

They believe that housing and healthcare are human rights. The organization works towards a world without poverty, homelessness, hunger, HIV/AIDS or other chronic illnesses.

In 1983, a group of visionary and compassionate men and women organized the nation’s first response to homelessness among men living with AIDS.

Starting with just a few apartments in Chelsea and Greenwich Village, they created the AIDS Resource Center. Continuing to advocate on behalf of homeless, with the support of the Koch and Cuomo administrations they opened Bailey House, the nation’s first congregate residence for people living with HIV/AIDS. Its visible presence on the corner of Christopher Street and the West Side Highway in Greenwich Village marked a significant milestone—it was the first time that any agency publicly acknowledged and funded a program that addressed poverty and homelessness among people with AIDS. Stable, supportive housing became a demand of AIDS activists in New York City and around the nation.

In 1986, we opened Bailey-Holt House, the nation’s first congregate residence for people living with AIDS. It provided tangible proof that stable housing helps people living with AIDS survive. As treatments evolved and the perception of AIDS changed from a death sentence to a serious, but manageable chronic illness we continued to add new programs and innovate new models of housing.

Brooklyn born Roddy Caravella is Charleston Charlie. He has been teaching and performing social jazz dances for the past 20 years. Trained under world-renowned dance greats, such as Frankie Manning and Sandra Cameron, Roddy is a choreographer who specializes in many early jazz dances. Known not just for the historical authenticity of his dancing, Roddy has a reputation for meticulous attention to accurate period attire. Mr. Caravella and his ensemble, The Canarsie Wobblers, regularly perform dances of the 1920's with Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra. In fact, the group was born at the inception of the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor's Island. Roddy is also a member of the Lindy Hopper All-Stars.

Gretchen Fenston the other half of Roddy Caravella is also a Milliner and Condé Nast Archive Registrar. Gretchen Fenston was born and raised in San Francisco. After receiving her undergraduate degree in textiles from the University of California at Davis, she moved to New York to study Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Although Gretchen began her career as a lingerie designer, she had always been intrigued by the allure of hats worn by 30s and 40s movie stars. She enrolled in FIT’s millinery program and took classes at night to learn how to make hats. Gretchen’s whimsical hat designs charmed friends and colleagues, who soon became customers. To further indulge her love of the history of dress, Gretchen garnered a Master’s degree in Museum Studies for Costume and Textiles from FIT, writing her master’s thesis on the millinery industry. Gretchen has won three milliner of the year “Milli” awards from the Headwear Information Bureau and her hats can be found in the costume collections of the Brooklyn Museum/Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Kent State University Museum and the Hermitage Museum in NJ. Her hats have also appeared in The New York Times, Women’s Wear Daily, The Village Voice and The Daily Sun.

The Minsky sisters are glittery gals who are swingin' and shufflin', tappin' and flappin' their way around speakeasy street, hoping to give you a glimpse of what has been referred to as "sizzle"! Gin and Kristen Minsky are the hottest sensation to surface in the Cabaret scene in years!

The Minsky Sisters have been moving their way into the hearts of audiences since they were barely able to walk. Having been raised backstage on the Vaudeville circuit by Eloise and William, widely known as Ellie and Billy Minsky, stage mom and pop of New York's best burlesque house, the pair learned to dance as a way to give their parents a break between acts.

Julie Reiner's special holiday cocktail menu, sponsored by Prohibition Distillery, delighted guests who enjoyed carefully crafted cocktails with festive names like “HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS” comprised of Bootlegger 21 NY Gin, ruby Port, lemon, cinnamon, aromatic bitters & cranberry preserves which one guest described as "Christmas in a cup."

Long Islanders celebrated  Little Shelter's Animal Rescue 7th Annual Masquerade Ball at the Watermill event venue in Smithtown, New York on  Thursday October 23, 2014 from 6pm-11pm.  Guests enjoyed:a cocktail reception, dinner, open bar, live & silent auctions & live entertainment!  All proceeds will benefit the Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoptive Center.

Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter situated  on six wooded acres in Huntington, Long Island. Included on the grounds is Sheltervale Pet Cemetery which has been the final resting place for companion animals for more than eighty years. Suffolk County’s oldest humane organization, Little Shelter has been devoted to saving abandoned pets and placing them into loving homes since 1927. Age, physical condition and socialization issues are never criteria for rescuing a pet whose life is in jeopardy. Most of their companion animals have been saved from kill shelters on Long Island, in New York City and in several southern states. As a member of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, Little Shelter is regularly called upon by the city’s municipal shelters to rescue pets in need of rehabilitation. All Little Shelter pets receive the highest quality medical care and are spayed /neutered before adoption. Every potential adopter is interviewed and thoroughly screened to ensure the best quality homes for abandoned dogs and cats.

Club Promoter Andy Troy, TV Host Cognac Wellerlane and Casting Agent John Thomas pose for a photo-op on Halloween Night in NYC

On Halloween night ghosts, goblins and  New Yorkers celebrated with Club  Promoter Andy Troy.  This year’s Halloween party began at Promenade, 344 3rd Ave. between 25th & 26th streets.  Later there was a parade of ghouls that attended a much more extravagant Halloween Bash at 230 Fifth of 1,000 guests on the club's rooftop overlooking all of  New York City.  I had a chance to interview Andy Troy himself who has been hosting club events for many years.  Later CastingJohn Thomas from JT Talent and Life Coach Bonnie Bruderer came by to chat.

Afterwards we attended Fashion Designer Malan Breton's Masquerade Ball at the Union Square Ballroom.  I was delighted to catch up with and interview Designer Pamela Quinzi.  Pamela Quinzi is a Fashion Designer born and raised in Rome, Italy.  She currently has her own brand and the most important pieces in her collection are the One-of-a Kind shoes that she customizes by hand. In April 2010 she had the opportunity to show with a Fashion Show “New York Pop Princess” her first Hand-Made Collection at the Greenhouse club in Manhattan.

Pamela is a stylist for important music videos of Italian artists such as Lorenzo Jovanotti, Luciano Ligabue and Emma Marrone. Pamela is Kilame’s testimonial and face of her own brand. She collaborates with photographers, make up artists, hairstylists, designers and stylists from all around the world. Determination is her key of success!

TV Host Cognac Wellerlane interviews Muta Ali grandson of Actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee at the 9th annual African American Film Festival in Southampton, NY

Southampton African American Museum showcased "Raise Your Voice",  the Ninth Annual African-American Film Festival for four days from October 2nd to the 5th. The celebration of the artistry of African-American filmmakers, actors, personalities, musicians and performers featured a powerful line-up of critically acclaimed, thought- provoking feature films, documentaries, shorts, jazz and spoken words.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Filmmaker Muta Ali, the grandson of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. We discussed his purpose for producing and directing the film.

"Life's Essentials with Ruby Dee" featuring Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Alan Alda, Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover was written and directed by Dee and Davis' grandson Muta'Ali Muhammad. The film is an open-letter style documentary in which America's First African American Couple of Stage, TV and Film Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis' rich lives guide their grandson on his personal quest to master lasting love, conscious art, and undying activism.

With over nine years of experience in entertainment news production for the web and television, Muta’Ali has produced over 125 entertainment news segments featuring recording artists, actors, and executives.

Additionally, Muta’Ali has produced seven feature-length documentaries for recording artists under record labels including Def Jam Music, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Atlantic Records.
Rounding out his range of production experience, Muta’Ali has produced three diverse, pop-culture-focused web series. He has also produced scripted and/or reality-based productions for clients including The Monique Show, Ebony/Jet Magazine, and Delta Community Credit Union.
