COTERIE & EDIT

Hello Darlings, Welcome Back to Cognac's Corner Magazine

Stylist Patricia Parenti attends Coterie

COTERIE & EDIT

Both women's trade shows are part of UBM Fashion Group and were held simultaneously at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, February 27 - March 1, 2017. The first photo above is me walking in the lobby. The other three photos were from Coterie for Fall 2017. The shows took place right after New York Fashion Week with many of the designers showing on the catwalk for editorial and at the trade shows for the buyers. Let's bring back the late 1970's Yves Saint Laurent peasant look being the prevailing trend that I saw at Coterie. Skirts were fuller and longer and many had ruffles at the bottom. Blouses were King with voluminous sleeves, self tying bows and ruffles in cotton or silk. Fur was flying all over with many accessories in bright colors. Black lace was shown in all different style dresses and blouses. Pants are high waisted with big bell bottoms. Colors are muted and in earth tones.

The rest of my blog is about Edit which is a section geared to more tailored and dressy womenswear. These fashions are for a woman who wants to dress up in sophisticated clothes that she can wear to a corporate office, to a black tie event or a daytime Bridal Shower/Wedding. These are classic clothes that can last a lifetime because they won't go in and out of fashion.

CAMILYN BETH
A well constructed tailored dress line inspired by the 1960's and 1970's. A made in New York City collection of stretch polyester crepe and silk fabric that stretches with your body. The first three photos are to show you how to take a dress from the office to dinner by wearing a shawl to cover up at work but showing your beautiful back at an office cocktail reception. Ladies these are the dressy daytime clothes you need for daytime weddings, bridal showers, graduations, bar mitzvahs, mother's day, luncheons, theatre, ballet, opera, polo matches and derby horse races. The signature dress in the photos has lots of darts that are used in the dresses to flatter every figure with snap closures in the back which make it easy to get in and out of yourself. Inside tags have inspirational lyrics which are free to download by musician Anthony Viscounte. All the sheath dresses have slits in them for easy walking. Other style dresses are fit and flare which flatter a woman with wide hips, empire waist which hides a big tummy, and bell sleeves that don't show flabby upper arms. Colors are two tone, pastels and brights in sizes 0-12 and they fit true to size. When you go to the website you will also see a collection for bridesmaids and white dresses for a bride that wants to be able to wear her wedding dress again. Retail prices $260.00 - $375.00 and can be ordered on WWW.CAMILYNBETH.COM

PHILOSOFEE

The designer Glaucia told me that the brand means a mash up of the words philosophy and f'ee - meaning fairy in French. This line of feminine evening dresses with matching coats and jackets is just what I feel every woman needs to go out in at night to cocktail parties, black tie events and evening weddings. Many venues are overly air conditioned so having a matching jacket for your dress saves you from freezing while still looking pretty and well dressed. Living in NYC I go out to cocktail events all the time with the owner (Cognac Wellerlane) of the blog I write for and in Spring and Fall you need a coat to go over a dress without sleeves for the night air is chilly. Besides being beautiful and easy to wear for their fit and flare shape all the dresses have pockets on the sides to stick your tissue or hands in. Fabrics used are Italian wools and heavy stretch satins that hold their shape. Notice the heavy duty metal back zipper in photo two? That is used for strength on a fitted waist dress so the zipper doesn't break like with those cheesy plastic zippers on most evening dresses especially when you have to zip it up and down yourself. A perfect collection for the petite girl which includes me so I think I might be getting a coat and dress for myself! Sizes are 0 -12 and there is a size chart online with measurements so you won't have to second guess your size. Retail prices $400.00 - $650.00. To order WWW.PHILOSOFEE.COM

STACI SNIDER represented by CFD CRESCALA Fashion Development

Staci is a designer whom works heavily with original inspiration from the pulse on pop culture. The intricate designs and detailing of her collection work perfect with the strong and sensual fabrics that she uses such as leather, Ponte Silk and faux fur. In the past she was a professional athlete so that comes thru in her clothing which is designed for the women of today that are on the move all day. You will find a sense of freedom and movement in her full skirts. Her silhouettes are tailored to be deconstructed, soft and sophisticated not hard and edgy. This collection has a 1980's feel to it in my opinion with the main color being black and all the styles having a fuller cut. This designer has complete control because she makes all her own patterns and samples with the production being done right here in NYC. Her target market is for a woman 45 and above that wants clothes which aren't tight fitting but not so roomy that her figure is totally hidden underneath. It's an advanced contemporary collection in sizes 2 -14,  priced $295.00 - $995.00 at retail and can be ordered at WWW.STACISNIDER.COM

LANDERO by ROBERT BERRY represented by CFD CRESCALA Fashion Development
CFD Crescala Fashion Development is a NYC Garment Center organization that helps up and coming designers with production, guidance and showroom/trade show representation. Robert is in the emerging designers classification but this designer has many years of experience designing ladies clothing. He uses Italian fabrics in fine wools and silk ponti knit but designs his own prints and his collection is made in NYC. His prints are influenced by different artists and this season it's Calder and last season it was Matisse. His collection is taken from the past and he updates the look (mainly 1960's) especially with the color blocking dress on the model that is influenced by a dress called the Mondrian by Yves Saint Laurent. I was drawn to his collection initially because of the coats and a great wool coat is very hard to find anymore in stores. The clothes cater toward an executive/professional woman who works in the arts or creative field. When designing he thinks about catering to females with many body shapes meaning a woman with curves not a young model who has a stick figure. All his samples are fitted on a live fit model for a perfect fit every time. Sizes 0 - 16 with retail prices $500.00 - $2,000.00. To find stores/websites selling his fashions contact the showroom CFD CRESCALA, Phone 646-912-9292 WWW.CRESCALA.COM or to see more styles in the collection WWW.ROBERTBERRYDESIGN.COM.

Designers from around the world showed their collections in an impeccably timed, theatrical production. Creatively curated with the right amount of glamour, glitz and theatrics, Malena Belafonte put on a show that impressed the usually hard to impress fashion crowd. The Journey Fashion Festival showcased designers from the U.S. alongside brands from Hungary, Italy, Denmark, Russia and Costa Rica during New York Fashion Week. The Journey Fashion Festival put on multiple events during Fashion Week, culminating in a show that went well beyond a fashion show at the Hungarian Consulate in New York City.

The show began with the premiere of Harry Belafonte’s tribute single, a re-make of “Island in the Sun,” performed by children highlighting the importance of racial diversity in the modern world. The song is featured on the forthcoming SONY's Legacy Recordings album "When Colors Come Together...The Legacy of Harry Belafonte" out Feb.24 and is produced by his son David Belafonte in observance of Harry Belafonte’s 90th birthday.

The first designer Sentiments Couture from Hungary laid out hard with a beautiful handmade couture collection followed by colorful women's dresses by Maison Marquise, then Zema who showed that porcelain jewelry belonged on the runway. Amazing performances by pro Latin dancers Aleksandar Vukosavljevic and Joanna Meller were creatively intertwined into the show. Fashion family Laoni and Wyhoys showcased sustainable fashions and accessories with a twist: bags made from stone and organic women’s and men’s collections. Singer and tapper Brinae Ali did a high energy tap performance around the venue while singing a capella.

Singer and Leonard Bernstein protege Tres Hanley walked the runway while singing “I Could Have Dance All Night,” looking like Scarlet O’Hara in a stunning red gown by international fashion designer, Henry Picado while models from his Este and Chlo collection followed. PopImpressKA showed a gorgeous colorful collection for women, men, and children. Hungarian designer Makány Márta finished the show with a beautiful surprise performance by Golden Globe winning actress Lori Singer who walked the runway to a live performance by composer Moshe Knoll and violinist Laura Jean Goldberg, only to surprise everyone by joining the stage and playing a beautiful composition “Poem” by Moshe Knoll.

Water sponsor Essentia kept the large cast which included Miss Ethiopia, Miss Honduras, Lori Singer, press corp and packed audience well hydrated.

Project Runway make up artist to the stars Kim Baker did the make-up using her line “Glamazon Beauty and Cosmetics” and famed hair Guru Marcello Costa did the hair with looks from braids to dreads.

Other brands and sponsors that were featured during The Journey Fashion Festival were KVO Jewelry (who’s collection of Diamonds galore were quite a hit), ready to wear Winnersport, Rekavago Shoes, Floedeboller, Alex Salem of Douglas Elliman, Hungarian Trade House, Skincare line Omorovicza, and The Hungarian Consulate.

After the show that was directed and produced by Malena Belafonte, guests, the press corp, models and cast mingled at a large VIP dinner hosted by the main sponsor Trade House and the Hungarian Consul General Ferenc Kumin.

Malena Belafonte is a singer, producer, songwriter, TV star, writer, creative director as well as an internationally acclaimed model. She is the founder of several companies, amongst them Pink Pirate Agency and Pink Pirate Productions. Malena Belafonte is also co-founder of The Speyer Legacy School, the only private school in Manhattan for gifted children. Having performed and produced all over the world, including for the Queen of Denmark, competed in the Finals in Dancing with the Stars/Europe, and worked as a Creative Director during Fashion Week, Malena brings it all to this timely and cutting edge concept that is THE JOURNEY FASHION FESTIVAL.

Edwing D'Angelo Inspired By The Color RED For Valentines Day

Hello Darlings, Welcome Back To Cognac's Corner

Edwing D'Angelo Fall/Winter 2017

This Season Edwing D'Angelo showed his fabulous collection in Midtown Manhattan on Valentine's Day so naturally he was inspired by romance and the beautiful color of RED!  So darlings, this collection was SEXY RED from head to tow!  Yes darlinga, everything from the hats to the shoes were red all designed by Edwing D'Angelo.  Sixty pieces were included for Men and Women!

FASHION DESIGNER EDWING D'ANGELO PRESENTS HIS COLLECTION TITLED "COLLISION" DURING NYFW FW17

D'Angelo presented his FW17 collection titled "Collision" on Tuesday, February 14th at 6:30 pm at the Artists Gallery located at 4 West 43rd Street (corner of 5th Ave.)

D'Angelo is excited about his return to presenting formal fashion shows in New York City after being absent from the runways for the last 2 seasons. "While I truly enjoyed showing overseas and seeking new markets and inspirations, the energy that I get from doing runway shows here at home in NYC is unprecedented," says D'Angelo.  This year, Edwing D'Angelo presented a unique point of view in a full display in the form of an all red alert.

His inspiration comes from the red dress uniforms worn by Pope Pious VII Noble Guards which was established in 1801. "I happened to come across a portrait depicting his coronation and I was floored by the vibrancy of the red and its predominance in the ceremony," says D'Angelo. "Red has always been one of my favorite colors, but I believe that's the allure of power is what intrigued me the most. It is no secret that I love opulence, but in this particular portrait, I sensed that the imposition of such guards was worthy of interpreting for today's modern day man and woman."   The collection could not come at a better time, he interprets his overuse of red to the social climate that the world is experiencing.  Red is the color of power and hard views. The powerful has always used it to stamp their dominance upon others.

The men's collection is smart and playful, offering a full array of options to wear both during daytime as well as nighttime; while making a powerful statement.  D'Angelo offers beautiful slacks, shirts, jackets, suits, vest, coats, sweaters and shorts in cotton, wool, silks; which for the most part are all ready-to-wear. His strong tailoring skills are on full display in this sartorial concept.

The women's collection, on the other hands, offers a softer tone, which romanticizes the presentation. D'Angelo visits his Latin roots and combines the glam of his original inspiration, the draping of the curtains and chandeliers, which inspired a sexy proposition for this collection. He gives her body conscious looks with swimwear becoming an integral part of the presentation. "Latin women want to feel beautiful and sexy at all times," says D'Angelo." "There is nothing sexier than beautiful swimwear made ready-to-wear that can also be part of her daily wardrobe, to be paired with pencil skirts, pant suits or simply to go clubbing with a bomber sequence jacket."  He also adds beautiful cropped trench coats in wool with novelty touches. It wouldn't be a D'Angelo collection without his signature show-stopper evening gowns with high slits, beautiful trains, and well-conceived fitting. This collection is liberating while bringing sexy back and empowering her to be herself. D'Angelo believes that in times like this, women will appreciate his approach.

Zang Toi Fall/Winter 2017/2018 Collection was simply inspired by the majestic color of Royal Blue.

During our interview Zang emphasized, “This season, I want to make a statement with the color “Brilliant Royal Blue, this collection is well-edited, luxurious, and glamorous. It features razor sharp tailored sportswear, and evening looks, perfect for making a grand entrance!”

Each garment that floated down the runway was exquisite than the other!

Zang always divides his collection into two parts daywear and evening wear.  Muted hues displayed the intensity of the royal blue theme.  A collection of daywear designs consisted of leather pants, jackets with fur on the sleeves, a double-breasted black satin jacket, and cashmere loungewear that was black and in white. Throughout the show models strutted down the runway wearing royal blue tassel necklaces and chokers.  Toi introduced his emblem on a royal blue long sleeve shirt. Lastly Zang Toi showcased a brilliant white pantsuit with fur details around the collar as well as a black jumpsuit with a silk blouse as an underpinning and a magnificent stacked pearlnecklace.

The inspiration for the Fall Winter 2017/2018 Collection is "All That Jazz" revealed Designer Helen Yarmak as we talked after her show on the opening day of NYFW 2017 at her penthouse suite in the Crown Building on Fifth Avenue.

Her love of all the old jazz hits and of course Frank Sinatra inspired her to create her new Winter collection for 2017/2018.

Helen showed fabulous furs in array of jewel tones and pink and raspberry hues that were significant. Fabulous furs that were shown included sable, mink, fox and ermine!

Many of the furs were reversible and also had fringe ascents.

Helen Yarmak is one of the top international brands in the world today. A mathematician by training, Helen combines precision and attention to detail with creative flair, exquisite design and dedication to the highest quality.

Her luxurious fur collection, spectacular jewels and fabulous croc accessories have dressed the fashion elite for the last ten years. The Helen Yarmak brand can be viewed at her exclusive boutiques in Moscow, Milan, Zurich, Odessa and Kiev. Her newest signature boutique is nestled in the famed Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Helen’s high profile clientele include Rihanna, Beyonce, Queen Latifah, Janet Jackson, Chloe Sevigny, Goldie Hawn, Sandra Bullock, Lucy Liu, Whitney Houston, Steven Speilberg, Melanie Griffith, Anna Kournikova and Catherine Deneuve. Helen Yarmak’s furs have been featured in "Sex and the City" and "The Devil Wears Prada" and “Ugly Betty”.

LIBERTY FASHION & LIFESTYLE FAIRS

Hello Darlings, Welcome Back to Cognac's Corner Magazine

LIBERTY FASHION & LIFESTYLE FAIRS

A trade show for men's contemporary fashion and lifestyle products was held at Pier 94 in NYC on January 24 - 26, 2016. This show features lots of brands from new and upcoming companies. Since I'm so staunch on interviewing vendors that make in America that I had no trouble finding them at this show. I loved the fact that many Millenniums were very interested in manufacturing their craft by hand and right here in good old USA. Some sections of the show are: The General Store which carries home wares, apothecary and small batch grooming products; Freedom Hall is about a group of menswear brands sharing a common thread of community, creativity, and craftsmanship; and Liberty Presents is a new area that allows designers to show their clothing collection without racks or booth walls. The charitable aspects of the fair were Art for Africa and 14+ Foundation where Levis and Schott donated jackets to a roster of artists who basically painted on them and then they will be auctioned off online end of February by a company called Paddle 8. MWR COLLECTION

The name stands for Mia Wright-Ross whom is the designer and a Parsons graduate.  She makes all these bags herself in Washington Heights, NYC. As an artisan she is very particular on her craft and doesn't let any bag leave her shop unless it's perfect. The large bags are made in tumbled leather which is a heavy duty/sturdy leather that will last for years to come. The small pieces are in vegetable tanned leather and woven embossed leather. All the bags are unlined because with her signature hand stitching the pieces would become too bulky. Since I have worked with leather in the belt and hair accessory business I can tell you the process of how she stitches these bags together is very difficult and precise. She punches each hole by hand then laces edges with calfskin cord in black or natural colors with a chain stitch. These bags are for men or women and the styles are make-up case, wristlet, clutch, backpacks, waist satchel, tote, cross body bag and circle luggage which is my favorite. Her bags were featured in the Freedom Hall section of the show. Prices are $295.00 - $4,000.00. To buy these made to last bags go to WWW.MWRWCOLLECTION.COM

HIDE & HOWL SUPPLY COMPANY

Made in Indianapolis, Indiana by disabled veterans. Christian Resiak, whom I interviewed in the General Store section of the show; told me he started this project with 10 men one year ago by teaching them how to stitch the leather bags by hand. After this he developed an apprenticeship program to develop permanent employees. The bags are full grain cowhide from cows in Maine that are even tanned there in colors of umber, matt black, and distressed brown. Even the waxed thread used to sew the pieces of leather together in a saddle stitch is from Maine. The designs are classic and timeless and will last you I would say 25 years or longer even with everyday use of the bags. The idea is a bag should be sustainable against the elements and look better as it ages. Styles consist of roll top bags (bottom photo) rucksacks, briefcases, (top photo) day packs, and small leather goods (middle photo) such as wallets, dopp kits (men's toiletry bags), tool kits, billfolds, trucker wallets, card cases, key throbs all for men. For the ladies they make unlined sling bags and rebel yell handbags. With this hard leather their is no need for linings because the bags are already stiff. All the hardware is sourced in the USA also. Prices for small leather goods - $80.00 -$150.00, men's bags - $325.00 - $425.00, women's bags - $150.00 - $350.00. To buy these great American bags go to WWW.HOWLANDHIDESUPPLY.COM

BLACKROCK LEATHER 'N' RICH

Thomas Angelo's Grandfather started this business in 1976 when Grandpa owned a chain of western stores in in Illinois called Christian Brothers and he sold a jar of this with every pair of cowboy boots that he sold. This product is still made in Illinois by hand with Grandpa's recipe. What's in this Blackrock jar will clean, condition, preserve and water repel your leather shoes/boots/bags/wallets/belts. Thomas was nice enough to give me a jar to try which I used on my Made in Italy leather purses at home. The outcome was that this product made my bags look brand new! The middle photo shows Thomas using his fingers to rub in the product into his shoes but if I were you I would use the white cloth he sells in the bottom photo to do so and then buff the shoes to a shine with the brush (in a circular motion)  in the photo also. I was brought up to take care of my shoes because before Made in China we didn't have lots of shoes and back then they were all leather shoes. Prices $4.00 for white cloth, $20.00 brush, $8.00 laces, and $10.00 for a jar of Blackrock. To order anything he sells WWW.BLACKROCK-LEATHER.COM.

AVI-8 - Article and Photos by Patricia Ann Parenti

This watch line was started 3 years ago with an idea about the dials being designed straight out of the cockpit of an airplane. The name stems from fright aviation. All the dials come in black/white/gray but the watch straps are in leather or nylon bands. The Japanese movements are quartz or powered by batteries. One of the nice features of these dials is they have day and date that list Monday thru Sunday. This classic pilot watch involves a chronograph timer and a Tachometer which measures speed and velocity. These watches are high quality and compare to brands such as Hamilton. Many of the styles feature a sub dial which consists of it measuring 1/10 of seconds. The second dial measures seconds and the 3rd dial measures minutes . The brand plays homage to WWII and the British Royal Air Force. Looking for a gift for a man than this is it for you can see the product as a gift in the middle photo. Prices range $145.00 - $150.00. To order these fine watches so that you can stop looking at your cell phone for the time every two minutes then go to: WWW.AVI-8NATION.COM.  Before end of February 28, 2017 put in code LFWI7 to get your 30% discount off the price.

This comfy clothing is 100% cotton knit that is pre shrunk that uses a double wash process to make it soft on the skin.
