During New York Fashion Week I visited the GBK lounge suites and had a chance to chat with many reps from different companies but one that was most interesting was with Stephanie Schuh creator of "The Science of Eating."
Stephanie battled with her weight since she was around the age of 10 years old. As a child, her parents worked all the time, Stephanie reveals, "My father was a dentist and my mother would assist him and run the business for him behind the scenes. Their office was built on the front of our home, so even though they were working, there was always someone at the house if I needed an adult. However, I was left to my own devices most of the time, and when I got bored I ate.
My mother did the grocery shopping and many times would allow me to go with her to pick out the food. Like most kids, I picked out the most sugary, fatty, over processed items I could find like sodas, candy, twinkies, pop tarts, sugar laden cereals, you name it, if it was bad for me, loved it!
My parents had me rather late in life, and I only had one brother who is 16 years older than I am, leaving me without anyone to run and play with. Once my parents would be done working at night they were tired, and my older brother was in college before I knew who he was, so this lifestyle left me planted in front of the TV with a bag of Doritos and a 16oz Pepsi frequently. One salvation I had was my wonderful Aunt Fran who would come and stay with us and watch me swim for hours in our pool. In the summers, because of this pool, I could take off a decent amount of weight, but once I became a teenager, my poor eating habits were showing on me more and more and I became rather insecure with myself. To make matters worse, I would get terribly sick with bronchitis at least twice a year, I suffered with migraines and ulcers from the age of eleven, I had horrible allergies that plagued me all year long and my A.D.D. made it so I could barely retain any information in many of my classes in school.
To make matters worse, as we all know when you become even just a tad bit chubby, school kids can be excessively cruel, and many times I was bullied or teased because of my size. I never felt like I fit in completely at school or at home, but I did find a wonderful group of friends who loved me for me, and I dearly love those girls for that!"
