Among the storied fashion houses, famed couturiers and industry elite, The Art Institute of New York City's next crop of young emerging designers made  their debut on the fashion industry's largest stage – Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  These special talent young designers took  their skills from the classroom to the runwayy.

I had a chance to chat with some of the designers backstage,  Here is a little bio about one that I had the pleasure of interviewing.

Kayla Lael
From Biology major to latex specialist, Kayla is a whiz at costume design. She’s busy running her own design label, Vengeance Designs, and has a soft spot for dramatic silhouettes and artful construction. Expect fashion-forward pieces and alternative wear for Kayla’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Collection. (2012 Graduate, Associate of Applied Science at The Art Institute of New York City).
Nelson Tavarez
Intrigued by fashion design for as long as he can remember, Nelson was obsessed over women's wear while attending services at church as a child. Nelson's collection for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is entitled "Within Shadows" and is inspired by modern architecture and color degradations. (2012 Graduate, Associate of Applied Science at The Art Institute of New York City).

Wendy Calderon
Wendy is inspired by her natural surroundings and social context, including her relationship with two different cultures - American and Latin American. At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the audience will see how Wendy sells seashells at this fashion show with her collection themed "Seashells & Corals." (2012 Graduate, Associate of Applied Science at The Art Institute of New York City).

Jeri-Lee Prescod-Alexander
For Jeri-Lee, fashion just runs in the family. Her grandmother was the neighborhood seamstress, and her grandfather was a cobbler. Originally from Trinidad, and with a strong affinity for African print and textiles, Jeri-Lee says her design aesthetic is easy, but individualistic. At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, she'll debut her collection entitled "The Ruins." Designed for the fashion-forward traveler, her clothes will take audiences to the Roman Coliseum. (2012 Graduate, Associate of Applied Science at The Art Institute of New York City).
